How Can You Tell If A Female Dog Has Had Puppies?

I rescued a 4 year old female Shepard mix 5 days ago and I'm trying to determine if she has had a litter. She has enlarged nipples which leads me to believe she has. What other physical characteristics can I look for to make certain?

Unless the litter was very recent, the prominent nipples will be the only visible clue.  If she was a stray it is highly probable that she has had at least one litter in the past.
If she has had a litter recently and the pups are still young enough to suckle sometimes, then she will produce milk if you gently but firmly squeeze a nipple starting near to her belly, and sliding to it's end.

Well, if she eats on a regular eating schedule, and she's always been the same size, and she's still on her regular eating schedule, and she's getting bigger, there's a 50% chance she's a preg-o !!!
