Leg cramps such as the one described by you above are very common in people who are more than 60 years of age. According to research about 1 in 3 people over this age get leg cramps on regular basis. One of the theories about leg cramps is that it occurs when the muscle which is already in a shortened position is stimulated to contract. Contracting it further causes it to get a spasm. This is normal and occurs mostly at night. However, these cramps can also be due to some other condition such as:
Side-effect of some medicines. Like diuretics ('water tablets'), nifedipine, cimetidine, salbutamol, terbutaline, lithium, clofibrate, penicillamine, morphine (withdrawal), phenothiazines, and nicotinic acid.
    Over-exertion of muscles.
    Dehydration.
    Renal dialysis
    under-active thyroid gland.
    Peripheral vascular disease
    Sarcoidosis.
    Nerve disorders
    Excess alcohol.

There are several reasons why you may be experiencing these type of cramps, all of which should be checked out with your family physician....such as:
      Blot clot (get ultrasound)
low potassium (eat spinach, potatoes w/skin and bananas)
      dehydration (drink more water/liquids)
      Thyroid issues
      side effects of medications
      and so on....
