In its most basic sense the term, cement is a binder, a material which settles and hardens on its own, and can also bind other substances together.
The term "cement" dates back to the Roman age who applied the expression "opus caementitium" to illustrate masonry which replicated concrete and was created from crushed rock along with burnt lime as binder. Cements applied in building are typified as hydraulic and non-hydraulic. The different types of modern cements are Portland cement, Portland cement blends, Portland Blastfurnace cement, Portland Flyash Cement, Portland Pozzolan cement, etc. The different types of Non-Portland Hydraulic cements are Pozzon-lime cement, Slag-lime cement, Supersulfated cement, etc.
The initial construction cement is as old as construction, and were said to be non-hydraulic. Wherever ancient mud bricks were applied, they were put together with the help of a thin coating of clay slurry.
