What Age Ends Child Support 18 Working Part Time/ Full Time, Or Pay Til 21 Not Going To School?

Answer Question

Typically,  child support ends when the child reaches 18 and is no longer in school (high school or college).  So, if a child is 18 and not in school, child support ends,  unless otherwise specified in the decree.  But, if the child is 18 and is still in school, the child support continues until graduation,  but he must be a full time student.  He can not, I do not believe, take one course a semester and drag this out until age 30 or something....  You must remember that I am not an attorney,  so you may want to contact one and have him look over the child support agreement to see just exactly what the stipulations are and for an interpretation of the laws in your state.  But, I would think if your child is 18 and is not in school,  then you have fulfilled your obligation.  It matters not if he is working or not, full-time or part-time.  The state considers him an adult and capable of getting a job and taking care of himself at 18.  I hope you feel more for your child that just seeing him as a drain of your finances and your relationship will continue on even though your state mandated "duty" is over.  Once again, contact a lawyer to be sure in your own state.
