What's In A Cigarette?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

All cigarettes carry a disclaimer that 'Cigarette smoking is injurious to health.' It is implied that tobacco is the element that is most harmful to the human body. But the fact of the matter is that, most cigarettes do not contain pure tobacco.

Cigarettes today are a combination of nicotine, cellulose acetate, ammonia, formaldehyde, cadmium and a host of other preservatives. Nicotine is the most important ingredient here as it stimulates the nervous system. Since these elements are present in a highly diluted state they induce a feeling of temporary euphoria in a smoker. Most of these substances if administered in its pure form could kill a living organism. There are some countries where legislation has been passed to force cigarette manufacturers to use pure tobacco and do away with artificial preservatives.

When a cigarette is smoked it produces tar. Tar is the source of many carcinogens. Most countries have tried to ban cigarette sales to minors but they have been largely unsuccessful.
