How Many Pounds To Make One Cup Of Coffee?

Answer Question

Are you asking how many pounds of coffee beans or ground coffee do you use to make one cup?  Well, if you used even *one* whole pound of coffee at a time, you would end up with enough coffee to fill up a 5-gallon pail.  And that is a pretty big cup.  So, let's see if we can get this down to a more manageble size, ok?

My recipe is one tablespoon of whole beans - I try not to use pre-ground coffee - per each measure of water in the tank of my coffee-maker.  That's my general rule of thumb.  I have found that exactly filling the electric coffee grinder that I use, and then filling the water tank up to the 7-cup level, makes very good coffee.

I also grind the beans very fine...almost to a powder.  And on the occasions when I find myself using pre-ground coffee, I grind that almost to a powder as well.  I can tell by the sound when I have reached that almost powder stage.  When the grinding starts, there is a lot of...well, grinding noise.  As the beans grind down more and more, that grinding sound starts to go away.  When I no longer hear the sound of the blades grinding against the beans, it's done.

Just for the heck of it...I just went and checked the weight of that grinder full of coffee beans.

It came to just about 2 ounces - or, if you like the metric system -  almost exactly 50 grams.

    Hope this helped.
