ATF stands for Advanced Tactical Fighter contract was an exhibition and validation course which was undertaken by the United States Air Force to expand the next-generation air superiority fighter in response to rising global threats, which included expansion and production of Soviet-era Su 27 Flanker-class fighter jet.

In the year 1981, USAF saw the requirement of a new air fighter mainly to substitute the F-15 eagle. It was predicted that the ATF would contain up coming equipment like higher alloys and merged material, superior fly-by-wire flight control systems, advanced power population arrangement along with stealth technology.

After a tough competition, on August 1991 the YF-22 was confirmed the winner and the Lockheed team were granted the contract to develop and manufacture the advanced tactical fighter.
