Brown or red discharge is periods but longer duration is not normal. Bleeding should not continue more than 7 days. At the age of 44, you are entering in to menopause. The cycle irregularities are the first symptom. So, your problem can be pre menopausal symptoms.

Now I hope I can Help.  Before I had my Hysterectomy 3 years ago I was having periods lasting 3 weeks or more and having a brown discharge and clots size of a roll of quarters and was told by my doctor that it was endametreousis and due to the fact I had no children at the age of 42 i was going to start menopause also.  And you can go through menopause with a hysterectomy if you have one ovary as i do.
