Primer is a base paint which is applied over top of surfaces before actually applying the top coat paint.
There are several different types of primer.
Some are spray on types used to cover metal surfaces to prevent against rust before spray painting.
Others are roll on types that are used for slick surfaces such as laminate, high gloss oil based surfaces or polyurethane stained.
Still there are other primers which are used to seal drywall before painting or are applied over top of a dark wall color before painting a light color.
Primers come in water based latex, (which is not to be used over joint compound).
Also, oil based primer, flat and acrylic. So be sure to use the proper type primer for the job.
