When you want to reference a website on the Internet when you are writing an assignment, you could log on the website on the Internet which is called Works cited: electronic sources and follow the instructions which are given on the website. There are, in fact, numerous other websites on the Internet which you could log on to in order to acquire the information which you require for the purposes of Web referencing and e-resource referencing.

It depends on the essay format that you use - for instance Harvard or APA etc, though if you don't know what style your supposed to write in then my guess is it doesn't matter.

If its a specific document thats online then while in the text you need to put the name of the author (or if you don't have that then the organisation/1st few words of the title) and then the year of publication in brackets after the bit where you have quoted or used information relevant to that website. Then either as a footnote, end note or in your references list at the end of your essay, type in the authors surname, initials. (date page was updated last). title of page in italics. date retrieved month, day, year. and the source. For instance: Central Intelligence Agency. (2008, June 19). Rank order – Internet users. The World Factbook. Retrieved July 13, 2008, from https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/rankorder/

However if it is the entire website you want to reference then just put the web address (URL) in brackets after the first mention of that particular website. For instance: "The use of blurtit (http://www.blurtit.com) can be useful when..." You don't need to have anything in the reference list or footnotes/endnotes etc.
