How Do You Make A Computer Faster?

Answer Question

10 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Firstly, it is important to keep in mind that your computer's default settings and configuration are not necessarily the best or the most efficient considering your particular usage.

You can start of with basic maintenance chores such as running up-to-date anti-virus; emptying  "temp" files; running up-to-date anti-spyware (it is preferably if you use two or more); emptying  the Recycle Bin; running disk defragmenter; and backing up your system.

To help it run faster you can try freeing up disk space; detecting and repairing disk errors; and speeding up access to data. You will find a lot of unneeded applications which you should uninstall to make your computer more efficient. To do this you can go through the uninstall menu on the computer, for a start.

Consider adding RAM (up to c.512 - 1024 Mb) - especially for later versions of software eg. Win XP.

(If you are running Windows 98 etc. however anything above c.128 - 256 Mb is unused).

It is very important to see that your computer is going at a fast rate. One reason of a computer functioning slowly can be the amount of unwanted files. First thing to do is to remove all the temporary files that the computer stores when you are surfing the net. You should also clear out all the files that are in the recycle bin. If these files are not deleted on a daily basis, the computer's memory will get full and it can also cause a hard disk crash. Other way of increasing the speed of the computer is to install more RAM (Random Access Memory). You can also amplify the speed by installing a new motherboard with a much better speed. Viruses also cause the computer to function slowly.

In addition to this, one very common thing to do (but may take sometime depending on your hard drive size) is to run a defragmentation program on your computer.  Should be under Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter.  Throughout the course of creating, deleting, moving and renaming files, the physical and logical structure of the hard disk becomes fragmented (i.e. files are being split up and store physically apart and not contiguous).  The defragmentation process moves files so that they are easier to access by the computer, and can improve performance immensely if hard disk fragmentation is the problem.  It doesn't cost a single cent, but might take a bit of time, which is a reason to have several partitions on your hard disk instead of one enormous C:

You can also invest in some software to optimize system performance, some of these are quite good and free.  Try things like TweakXP or many of the other popular and well recommended software.

        Hi,

Open services.msc and stop the unneccessary services. This is not a permanent solution.

You need to keep sufficient disk space in C:\Drive for desktop/Laptop clients.

Do regular disk cleanup and disk defragmentation using All programs --> Accessories -->

        All the best

Don't install too many programs which you really don't need to install. An enhanced RAM can be a better option.

Do not install unwanted programs or which you do not know. Use only registered anti-virus and keep your computer update with latest virus difinitions.

You can make your system faster by adding Extra memory card, or hard disk.

When you select any drive, by right clicking on it, you properties at the bottom of the drop down menu, by clicking it, you will be prompted for disk clean option. By doing so this option removes temporary file (Internet and other files). This make your system work faster
