One big similarity is that in both countries, the revolutionaries were inspired by new ideas about forms of government based on people rather than obedience to a monarch. Authors like JJ Rousseau and Tom Paine, who believed that people were born equal, had influence on both.

There is a very detailed resource on the two revolutions here.
