Which Is More Important, Contents Insurance Or Building Insurance?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Contents insurance covers the things that are in your house and building insurance covers the actual house itself. If you have a mortgage on your home, it is highly likely that there is a clause in your mortgage agreement that demands that you have building insurance. This ensures that you will be able to rebuild your house it if burns down or is otherwise severely damaged. If that was not the case, then the building society will have lost the asset that secures the loan. If you don't have a mortgage on your home then it's probably even more important to have building insurance, because any major damage will have to be paid out of your own pocket.

Contents insurance is less of an issue. In order to decide whether or not its worth having, you need to add up the amount of money that you would need to pay to replace all of your possessions at the current price. Then decide whether or not it is worth paying a monthly amount to be sure that you would have the money to replace those items if they were stolen or damaged by a flood or fire. If the amount is larger than you want to pay out of your own pocket, then getting insurance is worthwhile for you.
