What Can I Expect From The Viking Museum In Oslo?

Answer Question

The Viking museum is housed in a beautiful building which is one of Norway's best examples of Art Deco architecture. It has been open to the public and houses three Viking ships. The guides are available in a wide variety of languages, and the exhibits have clear explanations next to them.

The ships were found in three separate large burial mounds and the biggest is the Oseberg boat which was built for the burial of a prominent woman who died in 834 AD. The Gokstad ship was built around 890 AD for the burial of a chieftain, and the third ship was built around 900 AD.

The boats can be viewed from both ground floor and elevated positions. The museum also displays some of the grave gifts that were found, and the only surviving wagon from the Viking Age. There are also examples of textiles and wool, and an ethnological exhibition that tells about indigenous people from the Arctic regions.
