The general opinion among technical authors is that clarity and exactness are more important than which style guide you use. You are likely to be asked  to use different styles depending on which journal or organisation you are working for.

The most comprehensive guide to the topic that I've found is the Ohio guide, which discusses best writing practice for different types of technical writing, and you can also find  links to information on using the different guides.
