What Causes A Washing Machine Not To Agitate?
My clothes washer will not agitate. It fills with water as it should then starts spinning. Much of the water ends up on the floor. The spin cycle works fine. It just won't agitate.

Does it sound as though the motor is still running normally? If so, you need to pull off the back and check the belt. Washer agitators are belt driven much as the fan in your vehicle is. The belt may have broken, or is too dry/stretched/old to turn the pulley correctly. That's the cheapest, easiest fix, so check that first. Otherwise could be the transmission (yes, just like vehicles, washers have transmissions!) which is a more costly and complicated issue. If you're mechanically inclined, usually you can pull up a schematic on-line from your manufacturer's website. Get familiar with the parts and where they are located, and dig in.

The motor does have a different sound to it. I did not have any luck at the RCA website finding a schematic. They may no longer make Washers. I purchased this one in 1996.

Sounds like it could be in the Timer? There's only one belt on that washer so it's not a belt problem. If it doesn't agitate on all the cycles then it might be the timer. They're a little over $100. If it was in the transmission then it would make a lot of noise or lock up.
