How Are Genes Named?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The human body consists of zillions of cells with nucleus in the center. The nucleus contains genes which are the functional units of heredity. The genes are classified into distinct bundles known as chromosomes.

The human body has 46 chromosomes, out of which 23 come from the biological father and the remaining 23 from the biological mother. Chromosomes are named by letter "D" followed by a number. For example chromosome#1 is called D1; chromosome#2 is D2 etc.  Genes are named by the chromosome number and by the region they occupy on the chromosome. The DNA Parentage Test report identifies the genes that were examined during the process of testing. Thus, the term "D3S46" tells you that the gene that was analyzed was on chromosome #3at locus 46.
