What Is A 'Fairy Tale'?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A fairy tale is a story which features characters such as fairies, goblins, elves, trolls and other fantasy creatures. Princes and princesses are usually featured in fairy tales. Fairy tales usually have a happy ending.

The most popular fairy tales in the U.S are Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood and Town Musicians. These were voted for by a total of 1,200 children for a 2004 poll for UCI Cinemas.

Despite the fact that they are called 'fairy tales', fairies are not a main feature of the stories. The English term 'fairy tale' derived from 'Contes de fee', which is a French phrase, and was first used in the collection of Madame D' Aulnoy in 1697.

Famous fairy tale compilations include Grimm's Fairy Tales (The Wolf and the Seven Young Kids, Tom Thumb, The Elves and the Shoemaker) and Hans Christian Anderson (The Emperor's New Clothes, The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Pea).
