A spanner is a hand tool that is used to twist or hold a nut or bolt. It is a tool for gripping and turning a nut or the head of a screw or bolt.  The spanner comprises of a handle at the end and jaws at the other hand for getting a grip on the object.   It is also called as a "wrench."

There are different kinds of spanners like an open ended spanner, box-ended spanner, flare-nut wrench, combination spanner, adjustable spanner, socket wrench, pipe wrench, and monkey wrench.  "Spanner" is a special kind of wrench with tabs or a series of pins around the circumference.  These tabs or pins pierce into the holes slit into the object to twisted and turned.  In UK, spanner is the standard term for the wrench.  Spanner, a relatively new word, is believed to have entered popular English literature for the first time around the year 1915.
