What Over The Counter Medication Could Relive The Pain?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

What pain needs to be relieved, what kind of dog, how old, and how much does it weigh?
Tylenol or rather acetaminophen IS toxic to dogs and dogs die every day because people give their dogs something like this without the supervision of a veterinarian who knows how to calculate dosages per body weight and nature of the problem AND that it is toxic. A veterinarian may know a MUCH safer suggestion.
If you've given your dog tylenol and notice any of these signs or anything which seems off in the next 12 hours (though it always best to consult a veterinarian soon after ingestion) or so get to a veterinarian IMMEDIATLY as these can be some of the FIRST signs of acetaminophen toxicity:  vomiting, dullness, difficulty breathing, brown-colored gums (instead of a normal pink color) and drooling.

Animals are affected by the same meds humans are. They just require a smaller dose.
For a large dog, probably 1/2 a tylenol. For a small dog, 1/4 of one.

You are NEVER supposed to give dogs or cats human meds because it can kill them, lower dosage or not.

My vet told me it was ok. That's why I recommended it.

The best thing to do is to contact your vet and let him tell you what to do about the pain.

Obviously you meant well :-) but your vet knows your dog, it's weight, whatever the reason was it was the best thing for your dog right then and history including whether there was a history of any liver or kidney problems or signs of them, any other major health issues, and whether or not your dog was on anything that may react very badly with or cause major issues if given with tylenol even in a dosage that would be safe for another dog under other circumstances. It's just not that simple.
