He may be very active, or he may have worms. Try a good commercial wormer, if that doesn't clear up the problem, it's time to visit the vet.

He may have worms. You should take you dog to the vet to get him wormed. It may also be the quality of food you are feeding. Try a more natural foo with no fillers

I have a maltese and have the same problem. He eats like a cow but only weighs 4lbs. But he is very active. I mean he will run around the house and when I let him outside he has so much energy, he will walk 100 miles. So it all depends on how active your dog is as well. And P.S. When I just got him he had worms too and I got him dewormed and now he's actually up a pond and a half. He was really skinny when I just got him.
