The Kennel Club of Great Britain only formally recognised the Lakeland Terrier breed in the late 1920s, a few years after the breed was first named and classified in 1925 by the Lakeland Terrier Association.

Until then the Lakeland Terrier, similar in appearance to the Welsh Terrier and Airedale Terrier, went under a variety of local names. The title Lakeland Terrier sought to unite the working terriers of Cumberland, Westmoreland and the Fell district under the one heading.

Though these tough little terriers had worked with almost all the hunts of their districts for many years, it was not until the formation of the Association in 1921 and the Lakeland Terrier Club in 1932 that breed became widely appreciated as a single homogenous breed.

Today, the Lakeland Terrier is most popular not as working dog but as a companion and show dog. Registered pure bred Lakelands are not supposed to exceed 14 inches or be in excess of 17 lbs.
