Where Does The Phrase "Kilroy Was Here" Originate From?

I know it was used by the U.S. Army in WWII and it symbolized there passing through a battlefield.

Kilroy was a cartoon and I'm sorry I've forgotten the artist.  He was shown peeking over a fence.  I think the reason it was used was because it was a popular American cartoon of the time and it seemed appropriate at the time.  Undoubtedly another poster will have a better answer, but that's been my understanding.  I am almost 64 and even after WWII, there used to be the cartoon and the words Kilroy was here on fences all around.  Wish I knew more.
