I am not sure I entirely understand the question, but consider this; fair is in the eye of the beholder. Scenario 1: Dedicated teacher of, say 30 years, decides to retire, expecting to get a pension. On the last day of the school year, the principal comes into the classroom and says that there has to be cutbacks, and I'm sorry, we're going to have to let you go - effective immediately. OK, let's call that not fair.
Scenario 2: An abusive and mean office worker puts in his/her two-week notice, and on that last day, the boss finally gets up enough nerve to finally say, Trump-style, "You're fired!" Not only fair, but also maybe karmic justice.
Fairness is tricky.
