I am new to Blurtit. Someone said this phrase and I wondered how it started.

I haven't seen any common references to the phrase sleeping with the alligators, however, "Sleeping with the fish" is a well known phrase and it means - that a person is dead, rather he was killed and drowned and now is with the fist.
So alligators could imply he is dead and there is no trace of him as he is in the tummy of some alligator.
