It is a process of asexual reproduction. It actually involves the vegetative parts of a flowering plant such as stem; leaves etc. There are two different types of vegetative propagation in flowering plants. One is by stem and the other is by leaves.
By stem: The common methods of vegetative propagation by stem are the runners and the suckers. There are some stems from which new off spring can be produced are known as the runners. A runner is just a long, thin, stem which creeps along the surface of soil, giving adventitious roots at nodes. The nodes may separate from giving rise to new plants. Examples can include grasses; strawberry etc. The suckers are lateral branches of the stem with terminal buds and they grow from the base of under ground stems of some certain plants. They grow obliquely to the soil level and there produce new aerial shoots with adventitious roots, establishing new daughter plant for example mint and banana.
By leaf: In some plants like the Bryophyllum vegetative propagation is by leaf. The leaf of this plant has notches on its margin with adventitious buds. When this leaf falls on the ground the adventitious buds grow into plants.
