It is a myth in the regions of South East Asia or more specifically regions of the subcontinent that when a person hiccoughs, it is generally the sign that someone is missing you.
However in the scientific regard, the myth has no such authenticity. In lieu the hiccough is nothing more than a nervous reflex. There are two major causes that contribute towards igniting a hiccough. Firstly it is because of shock or surprise and the second reason is that of the condition of indigestion.
When the diaphragm (the muscle separating the chest from the stomach) contracts suddenly, it results in a person catching his breath with the same degree of randomness. This randomness of the breath results in a funny sound that is termed as a hiccough. Generally it is redundant in nature and is somewhat a half-hearted and unwilling attempt to vomit when the cause pertaining to the situation is that of indigestion.
