Check with your local humane society. It was reported on the local (Lansing, MI) news recently that 1400 cats had to be destroyed last year because they had no space for them. Only 900 or so could be placed in homes. If you get an animal from the shelter it will already be spayed/neutered and have shots so even if there is an initial cost, it will be less expensive than getting a "free" animal and then having to pay for those medical services afterward.
