The body's largest cavity is actually the abdomen. The abdomen is a large area which is between the thorax and the pelvis.
We usually think of the abdomen as being 'the stomach' but in fact it houses a number of functions.
Its role is not just to accommodate the stomach, but also the intestines, liver, spleen and pancreas. So, the entire digestive system is housed in the abdomen.
The urinary system is also contained within the abdomen, with kidneys and bladder being located within this area. In addition the reproductive system e.g in a woman, the womb and reproductive organs are also located within the abdomen.
The abdomen also contains muscles and a variety of blood vessels. So, the abdomen is actually much more than simply the stomach, or the 'belly': it is in fact one of the most important areas of the body for health and general well being.
