How To Format An External Hard Disk Driver?

My Sis gave me a Maxtor 3000LS 40GB external hard disk, and it says it's functioning right, then says it can't be formatted. I've created a partition and walked thru steps, and once got a message it didn't 'completely' format. I have Windows XP Profess. Version 2002 with SP2, Pentium II. It's a laptop with 256MB Ram, so I could really use those extra Gs. Anybody? Slow and detailed, please, and don't assume anything is 'too obvious'. Not to me!

You may have to connect it to a desk top with more memery depending on what she used it with and for.also try using maxblast3or4on it.if it will not format through the regular formating program they provide then go to the one that allows you to write the drive to all zeros and run that.it will take off everthing.if you want to be sure after you run the write to zero program run the regular formating program also.

Thanks! All I could find on Microsoft and cnet were software to repair my internal 'C' local disk, which is fine, if glutted. I'll put what I can on a flash-drive stick to give it room to wiggle, but the Ram is harder to improve. Thanks again!
