Almost 400,000 in England and Wales, according to the 2001 Census.
The 2001 Census had an optional question about religion. There were a number of tick boxes, and space to write in your own.
A rumour (false) went round that if enough people claimed on the Census to be Jedi believers, that the British government would have to give legal status to Jedi as a religion. This was appealing either if you found answering Census questions to be a terrible bore, or if you simply wanted to express your love of Star Wars films.
The Office of National Statistics was secretly pleased, since it meant they still got the forms back, and it meant that some of the people (especially young people) who might have been most inclined to ignore the Census, actually embraced the exercise rather than not get counted at all.
Jedis are concentrated in Brighton and Hove, (2.6 per cent of Census respondents), Oxford (2%), Wandsworth (1.9%), Cambridge (1.9%), Southampton (1.8%) and Lambeth (1.8%).
Relatively few Jedis are in northern England or Wales.
