What Is The Meaning Of The Name Devon?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

This is sometimes given to both boys and girls (more often girls) in North America, though it is very rare otherwise. It is a place name, and like a lot of place names it became a surname before being sometimes used as a first name.

Originally the surname Devon probably indicated that the bearer came from the county of Devon in south-west England. The county name itself derives from the name of an ancient British tribe, the Dumnonii. It probably means "Worshippers of the god Dumnonos." The name Dumnonos has a connection with the meaning "deep" (possibly because the Dumnonii were valley people.)

As a girl's name, Devon is sometimes spelled Devonne; in that case it is pronounced de-VON.
