What Does Specialize Mean?

    To specialize means "to be specific about or to be tailored to."  Something which is suited toward a particular activity or job is known to be specialized.  The word is generally used in reference with pursuit of an occupation or a branch of study. For example: You need to specialize in forensic study in order to analyze an object left at the place of homicide.

    The synonyms of the word "specialize" are "to dedicate," "to focus," and "to particularize." When one adapts oneself to a particular environment or functionality, it is known to have specialized in that particular field.

    Here are some of the examples of the word in a sentence:

    1. The shop at the turn of this road specializes in selling cricket bats.
    2. The paediatrician specializes in the treatment of children.

    Specialize is believed to have entered popular English literature for the first time in middle of the 16th century.
