Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Gabriel is the name given to one of the archangels. He is sometimes thought of as the angel of death and prince of fire and thunder, but more commonly as one of God's chief messengers. The name comes from the Hebrew and means 'man of god'.
He is said to be the only angel who can speak Syriac and Chaldee.
He appears in the Muslim religion as well as the Greco/Hebraic. He is counted by the Muslims as the most important of the four favoured angels and the spirit of truth.
In the Talmud Gabriel appears as the destroyer of hosts of Sennacherib, as the man who showed Joseph the way, and as one of the angels who buried Moses.
According to the Koran it was Gabriel who took Mohammed to heaven on Al Borak and showed to him his prophetic love.
In the Old Testament, Gabriel revealed certain visions to Daniel and in the New Testament he foretold the birth of John the Baptist to Zacharias, and appeared to Mary the mother of Jesus.
