When Yazid I succeeded his father to the caliphate in the spring of 680, the supporters of Muhammad's late cousin and son-in-law Ali ibn Abi Talib—who felt that leadership of the Muslim community rightly belonged to the descendants of Ali—rose in the city of Kufah, (now Iraq), and invited the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Hussain, to take refuge with them, promising to have him proclaimed caliph. Meanwhile, Yazid sent Ubayd Allah, governor of Basrah, to restore order. Hussain nonetheless set out from Mecca with all his family, expecting to be received with enthusiasm by the citizens of Kufah.
However, on his arrival at Karbala, west of the Euphrates River, on October 10, he was confronted by a large army of perhaps 4,000 men sent by Ubayd Allah and under the command of Umar ibn Saad, son of the founder of Kufah. Hussain, whose followers made up only 72 fighting men battled vainly, relying on the promised aid from Kufah, and fell with almost all his family and followers. The bodies of the dead, including that of Hussain, were then mutilated, only adding to the consternation of later generations of Shiites. Shiites observe the 10th of Muharram as a day of public mourning.

Karbala is a region in Iraq. Here a battle had been fought between the forces of Yuzeed and Hazrat Imam Hussain ,the beloved grandson of Hazrat Muhammed (P.B.U.H),the last Prophet of Islam. The conflict was that the ruler Yazeed was found guilty of corruption and had violated the laws of Islamic Government.Hazrat Imam Hussain wanted him to shun those corrupted actions and surrender to Islam, but he denied and ordered Hazrat Imam Hussain to either submit their will to him or prepare for death.Hazrat Imam chose the second option because he did not want bloodshed on the sacred land of Karbala.Imam Hussain emerged as a Martyr in this battle and became a memorable personality for numerous human beings.
