How Can Painters Learn From Sculpting?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Sculpting is an enhancing activity to the practice of artists who normally paint or draw. Shifting from two dimensions to three is a great way to get you out of your 'comfort zone' and loosen you up. Since much of drawing and painting is about creating the illusion of space, sculpture's emphasis on space is very valuable. It increases your spatial awareness. For instance, whereas drawing requires you to focus on just one angle of a scene, sculpture requires you to look at it from all sides. By understanding better how objects exist in space, your drawing will become more informed. As well, sculpture makes an artist more aware of textures and surfaces. This will make his or her paintings more expressive. Finally, sculpture can provide a bit of a break and relief from routine. Everyone enjoys variety in their work life and artists are no different in this respect.
