When Was Truro Cathedral Constructed?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Truro Cathedral was started in the year 1880, the first new cathedral to be built since 1220 when Salisbury was started.

The building was completed in 1910 when the two western towers were opened.

It was built on the site where the parish church of St Mary had stood, and was designed by architect John Loughborough Pearson.

He died in 1897, so never got to see the cathedral complete, and it was left to his son Frank Loughborough Pearson to oversee the completion.

The original St Mary's church was not completely demolished and its copper spire can still be seen as a feature in the south eastern aisle with the rest serving as the cathedral's Lady Chapel (chapel inside a cathedral or large church dedicated to Virgin Mary).

Over 200,000 visitors visit the cathedral each year.
