After connecting, place the iPod on the dock and your iPod will get detected. Some people prefer using the dock as it keeps the iPod standing instead of lying down.

You will not be able to transfer just by copying and pasting. You will need to install iTunes software on your computer. iTunes software will be on the CD that you got along with the iPod. After installing, add all your music files to the library section of the iTunes and transfer all to your iPod.
