What Is The Capital Of Croatia?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

The capital of Croatia is Zagreb. It has a population of around 1 million people and is located between the Medvednica mountains and the Sava river.

The city has been influenced by both Austria and Hungary which can be seen by it's stunning architecture. In particular, the buildings around the district Gornji Grad, meaning Upper Town which is one of the oldest parts of Zagreb.

Although Zagreb is the capital of Croatia, much of the tourism is centred around either Dubrovnik or Split and the islands.
Dubrovnik is a medieval fortressed city on the south-west coast that unfortunately endured some bombing during the Yugoslavian war in the early 1990s.
Split is a base, also on the coast, where travellers catch a boat to one of over 1000 Croatian islands. Some such as Hvar, Brac or Korcula are inhabited, although many others are not.

Zagreb has transport connections with both Split and Dubrovnik, so it is possible to see all in one visit.
