What Is The Recommended Daily Intake For Iron?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Governments recommend a normal daily intake of iron for people of different ages and also a maximum intake level so that the dangers of iron toxicity do not arise.

Children between 7 and 12 months old need 11 milligrams of iron per day, males and females needed this same amount. After the age of 1, the requirement drops to 7 milligrams per day and then rises up to 10 milligrams per day for children up to 8. After the age of 14, the requirements for girls and boys diverge because girls begin menstruating and need to take in extra supplies of iron to replenish their stores. Girls require 15 milligrams of iron per day in their diet as opposed to boys who need take in 11 milligrams per day.

In the normal adult, women need 18 milligrams of iron per day, men only 8 milligrams per day. After the age of 50 the daily intake of iron in both sexes can be reduced to about 8 milligrams per day.

Pregnant women have the highest requirements for iron of all ~ they require 27 milligrams per day for their bodies to cope with the iron demands of the growing embryo and placenta.
