How Can I Become A Good Cook?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

One of the most important things to do when cooking is to use a good cookbook, particularly one which aims to teach people how to cook and to follow the recipes to the letter.  Cookery has links with science and you need to understand the basic techniques before moving on to very sophisticated cooking. A recipe may tell you to beat the eggs before adding them to your mixture.  Beating the eggs actually introduces air into the dish and so is important; so do not skip any steps in a recipe!

In this way you can get to grips with the basics and understand how to make simple dishes which can then give you the confidence to move onto more adventurous cookery.

Food hygiene is also very important.  Always wash your hands carefully before cooking and always after handling raw meat.  Any dishes which have contained raw meat also need to be washed immediately.  Fruit and vegetables need to be washed prior to use and sometimes vegetables need to be scraped.  Always ensure that meat is thoroughly cooked through and be very careful when re-heating food, especially rice and meat dishes.  If you practise good food hygiene then at least your cooking will be safe and you will be able to have fun practising with various dishes.

Cooking is a fun and rewarding art to learn. After all, seeing your friends and family enjoy a meal that you have prepared is a great pay-off! There are a great number of ways to approach cooking. You could take formal classes at a cullinary institute. Another idea is to watch cooking programs to get ideas. You could even ask friends or family who are good at cooking to help you. Whichever approach you choose, the main way to get better at cooking is through practice and experience. As you get more experience in cooking you will learn about various types of food and how they respond to cooking techniques. You will also develop an understanding of flavour. The value of practice and experience is greatly prized in the world of cooking. That is why many head chefs start as sioux chefs in order to work their way up in the restaurant business through experience.
