My vet told me not to give a dog any pain-relievers. They have completely different bodies than humans and can overdose easily. It is very difficult to determine the right dosage for a dog and I don't advise it simply because we can't be sure that the pain-reliever is non-toxic to him or her. I suggest taking the dog to your vet and asking about getting medicine meant for canines in pain.

Mayfly is right! The Aleve would probably cause more damage!

It would suit you best to first confirm with your vet. Vets have been known to prescribe children's aspirin or benadryl for pets. They have also been known to warn against the giving of Tylenol or ibuprofen to pets since the pets find it hard to digest. As it is drugs stay in their systems for a long time.

Mayfly is definately right!!! I am a vet nurse and have seen many poisoning cases and death result from use of ibuprofen (as well as many other human drugs) these DO NOT even work the same way in dogs so while you may be poisoning them- they won't be getting any relief from pain!! The mode of death by these drugs is particularly unpleasant- severe internal bleeding usually occurs

My 3 dogs who are geriatric take Rimadyl, an antiinflammatory and pain reliever. This med was prescribed by my vet. They have, in the past, taken an aspirin but it should given at the vets discretion as it can cause g.i. bleeding. I might consider aleve but only at the advice of the vet. I understand Tylenol is harmful. After many years of having multianimals, I've found it's always good to make that phone call to the vet or go to Barnes & Noble and buy home vet book. Lots of great ideas and very interesting.
I also do some range of motion on my dogs joints..at the vets suggestion. They love it.
        Good luck!

Depends on the size of your dog how much he or she weighs, but to be sure ask your vet what would be the best meds to give him,

I have a 9 1/2 year old Great Dane. 185 pounds. He has hip dysplasia and severe arthritis in his right hind leg. His leg is getting very weak, and rotates in and under when he walks. He been on Rimadyl before, and the vet did blood work on his liver because of the Rimadyl and everything came back OK. Now she won't renew the prescription unless she sees him first. Well, he won't get in the car, too frail and scared to jump up and down. I just want something to alleviate the pain in the last few months of his life. Apart from that, he is happy and eats well, just does not move much anymore.
