What Does Secret Ballot Mean?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Secret ballot refers to a vote made in secret. It is a system where votes are cast privately no-one other than the individual would know how he voted. The totalled votes are public even if the individual votes are kept a secret. It is also known as the 'Australian ballot' as it originated there in the 1850s. Thus the voter's choice is kept very confidential.

This system is preferred because it ensures a sincere choice by the voter and rid them of any fear and intimidation by external factors to choose according to their desires. It is an attempt to stop influence through bribery or pressure and threats. It is a suitable method for several voting systems. Many democracies in the world have adopted this system of voting. The most common form of this method in the modern world is to provide for pre-printed ballot papers with the name of the candidates or questions and respective check boxes.
