How Do I Explain How Sugar Crystals Grow Faster In Distilled Water?
I have a science project to tell how sugar crystals grow faster in distilled water or tap water

My daughter and I are doing this project, and have tried it three times. Every time the sugar crystals grow faster in the distilled water. But all the research we are finding is giving us mixed reviews! AAH! I don't know what to do!

Sugar crystals grow fast in distilled water as compare to the tap water. The reason behind this is that tap water contain a lot of impurities that might interact with the molecules of the sugar crystal lattice. These impurities are in the central area and crystals also grow from the center that's why tap water do not allow sugar crystals to grow faster. Details

That is not correct.....sugar crystals grow faster in tap water reason being, tap water has minerals in it what makes the impurity levels higher thus promoting faster growth.

Question - Why do sugar crystal grow faster in tap water as opposed to
distilled water?
-------------------
Ms. Diedrich,
Tap water may contain particulate material which offer nucleation sites where
crystals can start to grow. Distilled water has no such contaminants.

ProfHoff

In order to grow a crystal one needs a centers where the crystals can
cluster. These are known as nucleation centers, not to be confused with
atomic nucleus. Since tap water has many minerals compared to very few in
distilled water, the chance of starting crystallization is enhanced for tap
water.
