    McDonald is an Irish origin name and it means "son of donald"

    Though it is true that many Scottish and Irish names are the same or similar, some are definitely from one country or the other originally. McDonald is ABSOLUTELY Scottish in origin, and yes, it does mean "son of Donald".

      ...although McDonald may be originally "absolutely scottish", I am a McDonald (not MacDonald) that is absolutely Irish. A lot of a's were dropped when people came to America, including my great great grandfathers.
