Chan is a type of the Mahayana sect of Buddhism which puts great emphasis on moment by moment awareness and looking intensely into the character of things by direct experience. Bodhidharma is the Buddhist monk who is conventionally given the credit for founding Chan Buddhism in the country of India.
The information available on Bodhidharma's life and teachings is very diminutive and unclear. Many details have been coated with legend and myth, but most agree on the fact that Bodhidharma was a South Indian monk who undertook a journey to China.
Over the years, Chan has become more and more adaptive to the Chinese intellectual surroundings. From there it has spread to countries like Korea and Vietnam and has come out as a school that is renowned for its unwillingness to depend on written texts.
Basically, the essence of Chan is on meditation and daily life ahead of philosophical hunts.
