American Samoa is a very loosely organized and unincorporated territory of the United States.

It is situated in the South Pacific Ocean and is just southeast of Samoa, the sovereign state. The biggest and most significant and populous island is Tutuila. Rose Atoll, Manu'a Islands, and Swains Island are also a part of the American Samoa's territory.

American Samoa's total land area is 200.22 square kilometers.  American Samoa is a part of the chain of islands known as the Samoan Islands, which lies to the west of the Cook Islands and east of the Wallis and Futuna group of islands. To its south is Tonga, while it lies 300 miles south of Tokelau.

As of year 2000, American Samoa had a population of 57,291. It is the only territory of the United States that lies south of the equator.

American Samoa's capital city is Paga Pago, and the spoken languages are Samoan and English. The US dollar is the official currency. Tourism and the fishing industry form the basis of it's economy.
