The epididymis is the tiny tube where the sperm collects after leaving the testes. It is that part of the genital tract of males which is situated next to the testes. It is in the epididymis where the maturation of the sperm is partially accomplished. The epididymis receives the sperm from the testes and continues. This extension of the epididymis where the sperm collects after leaving the testes is known as the ductus deferens.
The epididymis is a highly convoluted tube. It is about seven metres in length. The epididymis connects the testes to the vas deferens. The sperm are moved along this tube and then stored in the lower part, until it is forced out of the system by ejaculation. This organ is shaped like a tubular coil. It is attached to and lies on the testicle. Within the epididymis the sperm develop, complete their process of maturing, and acquire their powerful capabilities to swim. It is through the vas deferens that the matured sperm leaves the epididymis.
