Parole is a program which monitors and enforces a set of guidelines an inmate has agreed to follow in order to be released from a detention facility.
Someone who is on parole will have to report to a parole officer on a strict incremental basis, will be screened for drugs, and required to maintain a living and working situation approved of, or designed by the parole officer. It should be fairly obvious if someone is on parole.
Probation is different, with less frequent reporting periods and far fewer lifestyle constraints this could be easily kept a secret.
