What Is The Angel Of The North?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Angel of the North is a large modern sculpture in the shape of an angel that is situated just off the A1 motorway in the North East of England, just south of Newcastle. It marks the entrance to Tyneside and is an impressive monument seen by thousands of motorists every day.

The sculpture has been made from a metal alloy that is a type of steel called Corten steel. It is made up from iron with a small amount of copper mixed into it. This gives the sculpture its orangey colour and it also provides the metal with some resistance to weathering. This is important because of the exposed location of the Angel.

The Angel of the North is over 20 metres and high and its outstretched wings have a span of 54 metres. This is like having a jumbo jet stuck in the ground by its tail with its wings outstretched.
